Scout Checklist for Weekend Camping. This list is very complete. Some items may not be needed for all campouts.
Pocketknife* The best pocketknife for camping has a locking blade between 2-4 inches and is kept sharp and clean Rain gear (waterproof poncho) The poncho should be durable - not one of the cheap emergency ones Water bottle 1 liter Nalgene bottles are great - durable, has measurement markings, heat and cold resistant Wrap a couple of turns of duct tape around it so you have some in an emergency Flashlight The little AAA-cell LED flashlights are often enough test batteries and bring an extra set Matches and firestarters The best firestarter is a "taco" made from vaseline and a makeup remover pad. Make a half-dozen of these and put them in a ziploc bag or a empty prescription bottle with some matches and the striker from the matchbox Sun/Insect protection Whistle Compass (liquid filled, rectangle base) A complicated lensmatic or sighting compass is not necessary - the most important thing is that it have a straight edge and a rotating bezel Extra clothing layer for warmth Polarfleece pullovers or wool sweaters offer a lot of warmth for their weight Cotton clothes make you colder because they absorb a lot of moisture/sweat and then make your body cold as it evaporates Snack (granola bar or energy bar)
Bandaids 4” Gauze Adhesive tape Moleskin great for treating or preventing blisters Hand sanitizer Antibiotic ointment Travel scissors (optional) Chapstick
Scout Shirt (wear in the cars) Boots or Sturdy closed-toe shoes Crocs will not protect your feet against axes or dropped items Backpack with rain cover

25-50 feet of nylon rope (like Paracord) paracord has so many uses in camp I always bring some Pad of paper and pencil Repair kit - Needle, thread, buttons, safety pins, rubber bands, zip ties being able to repair a broken pack or zipper can make a huge difference Large Garbage bags (2) wrapped with rubber bands Change of clothes Scout book and pen
inexpensive plastic items from Target or Wal-mart can work great, doesn't need to be special camping gear Spoon Fork Plate Cup
Soap this has uses in first aid, so get a mostly-used bar and put it in a plastic bag Toothpaste Floss Toothbrush Towel a small hand towel or microfiber towel is normally enough -- not a large bath towel Personal Medicine should be turned in to Lead ASM for trip in bag, labeled with instructions
